History

EMU's journey since 1979

From an institute of technical specialties to one of the leading universities of the Mediterranean

1979

Foundation of the Institute of Higher Technology

EMU began its history as the Institute of Higher Technology. The first 105 students enrolled in 3-year programs in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering.

1986

University status achieved

The Institute of Higher Technology was transformed into the state Eastern Mediterranean University. Faculties of Engineering, Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, and the School of Computing and Technology were opened.

1990–1999

Expansion of faculties

Faculties of Architecture and Tourism (1990), Law (1996), Communication (1997) and Education (1999) were opened. EMU became a multi-disciplinary university.

2005

International recognition

EMU gained full membership in the European University Association (EUA) and the International Association of Universities (IAU), confirming its status on the global education stage.

2010–2012

Medicine and health sciences

Faculties of Health Sciences (2010), Pharmacy (2011), Medicine and Tourism (2012) were founded. EMU became the leading center of medical education in Cyprus.

2019

Faculty of Dentistry

The opening of the Faculty of Dentistry completed the full range of medical programs. Today EMU is the only state university in Northern Cyprus with its own dental clinic.

Accreditations

Accreditations and international recognition

EMU is the only state university in Northern Cyprus whose programs are all accredited by Turkey's Higher Education Council (YÖK). International accreditations confirm world-class education quality.

ABET (Engineering)

EMU is one of only five universities in the region to receive the prestigious ABET accreditation in engineering.

FIBAA (Business and IT)

The Faculties of Business and Economics, Tourism and the School of Computing are accredited by FIBAA, the European quality assurance agency.

MİAK (Architecture)

EMU's Faculty of Architecture holds MİAK accreditation confirming the quality of architectural education.

TEDQUAL (Tourism)

The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management has earned TEDQUAL accreditation, the international standard in tourism.

EAQUALS (English)

EMU's language school holds EAQUALS and DEDAK accreditation, confirming the quality of English teaching.

Membership in associations

Full member of EUA, AACSB, EFMD, IAU, the Mediterranean Universities Union and the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World.

Student life and opportunities

EMU offers a vibrant student life: from sports and creativity to international exchange programs.

Exchange programs

EMU cooperates with universities in 13 countries, including the USA, Canada, Italy, Austria, South Korea and China. Students can spend 1–2 semesters abroad with credit transfer.

Sports and recreation

A 5,000-seat stadium, athletics track, 3,500-seat indoor sports complex, cardio center, TRX and sparring halls. EMU's beach club on the Mediterranean coast.

Scholarships

Most of EMU's international students receive a partial scholarship (50% or 25% off tuition). Full scholarships are also available for bachelor's and PhD programs.

Student clubs

Over 50 student clubs and international student associations. Annual Spring Festival, concerts, cultural events and orientation days for freshmen.
