Program overview

The English Language Teaching (B.A.) program is a 4-year undergraduate program delivered by the Department of Foreign Language Education of the EMU Faculty of Education. The program trains qualified English teachers for schools, language centers, universities and corporate programs.

The ELT department has well-established educational programs and has served for decades as an academic consulting and training center for English teachers both at EMU and in the local education system. The program combines deep theoretical training in linguistics and teaching methodology with mandatory teaching practice.

All instruction is in English, allowing graduates to work in international educational programs worldwide. The bachelor's degree opens the path to Master's (M.A.) and Doctoral (Ph.D.) programs in English language teaching.

About the department

The Department of Foreign Language Education of the EMU Faculty of Education is a recognized center for training and professional development of English teachers. For decades, the department has served as an academic consulting and training center for English teachers both within the university and in the local education system.

The department's faculty actively conduct research in language teaching: ELT methodology, applied linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, language assessment and testing, materials development, and Teaching English to Young Learners. Students get access to this research experience from the very first years.

Program structure

The program lasts 4 years and consists of 8 semesters. The language of instruction is English. The educational process is built in stages:

  • First year — fundamentals of English, introduction to linguistics and pedagogy
  • Second year — English language teaching methodology, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics
  • Subsequent semesters — specialized courses: second language acquisition, materials development, language assessment and testing, Teaching English to Young Learners
  • Teaching practice — mandatory practice teaching in schools

The program combines theoretical foundations with practical skills: students develop teaching materials, analyze real classrooms (classroom research) and conduct micro-lessons before full practice in schools.

What you will study

The curriculum covers the theory and practice of teaching English. Students study subjects such as:

  • English Language Teaching methodology (ELT Methodology)
  • Second Language Acquisition
  • Linguistics, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics
  • Materials Development
  • Language Testing and Evaluation
  • Teaching English to Young Learners
  • Intercultural communication
  • Pedagogy and educational psychology

Key learning outcomes include lesson planning, classroom management, program and materials development, and conducting classroom research (action research) — skills in demand in modern pedagogy.

Teaching practice

Teaching practice is a mandatory part of the program. The Department of Foreign Language Education has served for decades as an academic center for training English teachers for EMU and the local education system, so students have access to an established system of school practice.

Students observe lessons of experienced teachers, conduct micro-lessons and full classes under the guidance of mentors. This model allows graduates to enter the job market with real teaching experience, not just theoretical preparation.

Infrastructure

The EMU Faculty of Education provides students with a modern learning environment:

  • Modern classrooms and language laboratories for teaching practice
  • Özay Oral Library — one of the largest university libraries in the region: more than 160,000 printed books, 30,000+ e-journals, 30,000+ e-books and 50+ international databases
  • Computer laboratories for research work and materials preparation
  • More than 100 student clubs — including language and exchange clubs
  • A multicultural campus — students from more than 60 countries

Career prospects

Graduates of the program are in demand in education worldwide:

  • English language teacher in schools, language centers and universities
  • Curriculum developer and author of teaching materials
  • Language assessment specialist (examination centers, testing)
  • Educational consultant in the public and private sector
  • International educational programs — teaching English as a foreign language abroad
  • Further study — M.A. in English Language Teaching and Ph.D. program at EMU

EMU offers a complete academic track: ELT bachelor's → M.A. in ELT → Ph.D. in ELT. Master's graduates work in universities and language institutes, develop curricula and take leadership positions in education.
