Program overview

The Medicine program at Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) is a joint program with Marmara University (Turkey) and one of the most prestigious medical programs in Northern Cyprus. It is a 6-year full-time undergraduate program leading to the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. All instruction is in English.

The curriculum is developed in line with global medical education standards and combines fundamental theoretical knowledge with extensive clinical practice. The first three years are spent at EMU (Famagusta, Northern Cyprus), and the last three years at the accredited medical faculty of Marmara University in Turkey. This structure gives students a unique international educational experience and access to the resources of both universities.

Upon graduation, students receive a medical diploma signed by both faculties, allowing them to work as doctors in Turkey and Northern Cyprus without additional equivalence exams.

Faculty mission and vision

The fundamental mission of the EMU Faculty of Medicine is to produce graduates with the highest level of medical knowledge and skills, meeting the most advanced international standards. Graduates should understand global health challenges, strive to improve the quality of life of patients and communities, stay up to date with world medical developments and apply the latest technologies in daily practice.

Special attention is paid not only to clinical skills but also to professionalism, medical ethics, leadership, effective communication and teamwork. Teaching is based on the principles of evidence-based medicine, scientific research and a student-centered approach.

Structure of the program

The program lasts 6 years and includes a preparatory language year for students who need to improve their English (all instruction is in English). In the first three years of core study, students learn fundamental medical sciences at EMU; the last three years are spent at the UTEAK-accredited medical faculty of Marmara University.

  • Preparatory year (1 year): intensive English course for future program students.
  • First three years (EMU): fundamental medical sciences — anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology. Turkish language courses are offered to international students in the first three years.
  • Last three years (Marmara University): clinical rotations across medical specialties — internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry and others.

The curriculum implements vertical and horizontal integration in line with the world's leading medical education programs.

What you will study

The program covers all core medical sciences and clinical disciplines. The first three years focus on fundamental medical sciences: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology and microbiology. In addition, the curriculum includes modules in humanities, behavioral science, philosophy, natural sciences, communication skills and information technology.

The next three years emphasize clinical rotations in medical specialties: internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry and others. Students gain hands-on experience in university hospitals and affiliated medical institutions.

Students can present their research at MASCO — the international student congress organized by Marmara University — and take internships in hospitals or academic programs supported by the EU and WHO.

Accreditation

The program is accredited by TEPDAD — the Turkish Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Medical Education Programs. This guarantees the curriculum meets high national and international standards of medical education.

The final three years are spent at the medical faculty of Marmara University, accredited by UTEAK — the National Medical Education Accreditation Council. Graduates receive a single diploma with joint signatures of both faculties.

Facilities and laboratories

The EMU Faculty of Medicine ensures high teaching quality thanks to a strong team of internationally recognized and experienced academics.

  • Four student laboratories with modern audio-visual systems for basic science disciplines and laboratory practice.
  • Four laboratories for research and practical classes.
  • Anatomy laboratory with advanced individual 3D viewing technology, cadaver material, dissection tables and models.
  • Computer laboratory for applying theoretical knowledge in biostatistics.
  • The faculty's own medical library.

Career prospects

The EMU medical curriculum is identical to and run in cooperation with Marmara University. Upon graduation, students receive a medical diploma with joint signatures of both faculties, so they can work in Turkey and Northern Cyprus without additional equivalence exams.
