Program overview

The Computer Engineering program at Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) is a 4-year full-time undergraduate program (B.Sc.) delivered by the Faculty of Engineering. The university is located in Famagusta, Northern Cyprus, and provides a comprehensive education in computer engineering, combining theoretical foundations with practical skills.

The program prepares students to design, develop and manage computer systems and software. Alongside core courses in software, hardware and computer networks, it offers a variety of electives in mathematics, physics, English, economics, business and social sciences, providing an enriched learning experience.

The curriculum is regularly updated and designed in line with international standards. Particular attention is given to artificial intelligence: students can choose electives in AI, machine learning and data analysis, and EMU also offers a separate Artificial Intelligence Engineering program for those who want to focus specifically on AI.

Program objectives

The main goal of the program is to introduce students to the most current developments in computer engineering while developing lifelong learning skills.

The program produces qualified and broadly educated computer engineers with deep knowledge of computer systems, hardware and software, able to apply theoretical knowledge in practice by creating new projects and solutions. Graduates are well adapted to a fast-changing technological environment thanks to a solid foundation in technology principles and hands-on laboratory experience.

Structure of the program

The program lasts 4 years and consists of 8 semesters. The main language of instruction is English; Turkish-language groups are also available. Students without an English certificate can take the English Preparatory School course.

  • Core block — software, hardware and computer networks
  • General education electives — mathematics, physics, English, economics, business, social sciences
  • Practice from the first years — laboratory classes and hands-on experience with development tools
  • Graduation project — independent work in the final year
  • Further study — Master's (M.S.) and Doctoral (Ph.D.) programs in computer engineering at EMU

The Department of Computer Engineering also offers Master's and Doctoral (Ph.D.) programs, including research in machine learning, data science, cybersecurity, embedded systems and distributed computing.

What you will study

The curriculum covers all key areas of computer engineering:

  • Programming and software development — algorithms, data structures, object-oriented programming, software engineering
  • Hardware and architecture — digital logic circuits, computer organization, microprocessors, embedded systems
  • Networks and security — computer networks, network security, distributed systems
  • Theoretical foundations — discrete mathematics, automata theory, computational complexity
  • Systems — operating systems, database management systems, real-time systems
  • Artificial intelligence — electives in AI, machine learning, cybersecurity and mobile app development

The program emphasizes hands-on learning: laboratory classes, projects and a graduation project in the final year. Students work with several programming languages and modern development tools.

Accreditation

The Computer Engineering program is accredited by the international agency ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) — one of the most authoritative engineering education accrediting bodies in the world.

ABET accreditation confirms the program meets strict international quality standards, and its graduates are recognized by employers and universities worldwide. In addition, the curriculum is constantly updated in line with industry requirements and international practice.

Laboratories and practice

Students work in modern laboratories of the EMU Faculty of Engineering, including robotics and artificial intelligence laboratories, applying theoretical knowledge from the first years.

  • Robotics and AI laboratories — work with modern technology platforms
  • Computer laboratories with up-to-date software and development tools
  • Practice-oriented learning — projects, hackathons and lab work
  • EMU research infrastructure — the Advanced Technology and R&D center and university research centers

The laboratory base and research centers give EMU students access to cutting-edge technology and the opportunity to take part in real research projects.

Career prospects

Graduates receive the title of Computer Engineer. The demand for computer engineering graduates is high both locally and internationally. Many graduates work at major international technology companies with high salaries.

  • Software engineer — software and application development
  • System architect — designing complex IT systems
  • Network engineer — design and maintenance of network infrastructure
  • Embedded systems engineer — hardware-software solutions
  • AI and machine learning specialist — one of the fastest-growing fields
  • Database administrator and IT consultant

Many graduates continue their studies in Master's and Doctoral programs at EMU and abroad; some work at prestigious universities in the UK and the USA. An ABET-accredited diploma opens doors on the international job market.

Admission

Admission to the Computer Engineering program requires a high school diploma or equivalent. International students must prove English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS and similar) or complete the English Preparatory School course.

Main documents for application:

  • International passport valid for at least 6 months from the application date
  • High school diploma and transcript
  • Passport-size photos
  • English language certificate (IELTS, TOEFL and similar)

If documents are not issued in English, an official translation is required along with the originals. Our EMU Partner team will support you through the entire admission process — from consultation and program selection to receiving your acceptance letter.
