Life in Northern Cyprus: what CIS students should know

Climate and weather

Northern Cyprus has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers. The sun shines more than 300 days a year. In summer (June–September) air temperatures reach +30–35 °C and the sea +25–28 °C. In winter (December–February) the thermometer rarely drops below +10 °C, but it rains more often.

What to pack: light clothes for summer (shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops), a couple of sweaters for the evenings (especially in winter), a swimsuit and sunscreen. In winter a light jacket is enough. An iron and bed linen are usually provided in the dormitory.

Where to live: dormitory or apartment

EMU students have two main accommodation options:

ParameterEMU dormitoryPrivate apartment
Cost$150–300 / month$200–500 / month
MealsFull board (included)Self-catering
LocationOn campusFamagusta / Iskele
ContractPer semesterPer year
UtilitiesIncluded+$50–80 / month

Many students start in the dormitory and move to an apartment with classmates in their 2nd–3rd year. Our agency helps find a suitable option in either case.

Transport and getting around

The main types of public transport in Northern Cyprus are buses and dolmushes (minibuses). A ride costs about ₺15–20 (≈$0.7–1). Bus No. 5 runs regularly from the EMU campus to downtown Famagusta. Many students also use taxis (via the Kibris Taksi app) or rent a scooter (≈$150–200 per month).

Note: an international or local driving license is required to rent a scooter/car. Riding without a license — a fine of up to ₺5000.

Food and groceries

Famagusta and Iskele have large supermarkets: Lemar, Tempo, Kipa. Food prices are noticeably lower than in Moscow or Astana:

  • Bread — ₺30–40 (≈$1.5)
  • Milk (1 l) — ₺45 (≈$2)
  • Chicken fillet (1 kg) — ₺150–200 (≈$7–9)
  • Rice (1 kg) — ₺60 (≈$3)
  • Fruit/vegetables — ₺40–80 (≈$2–4) per kg
  • Lunch at a cafe — ₺200–350 (≈$10–15)

If you live in a full-board dormitory, meals are included. The campus cafeteria offers three meals a day with a student card.

Communication and internet

Three main mobile operators operate in Northern Cyprus: Turkcell (KKTC), Telsim and Vodafone. A popular student plan costs ₺200–300 per month (≈$10–15) with 10–15 GB of data. EMU campus has Wi-Fi (up to 50 Mbps), included in the tuition fee.

Tip: you will need your international passport to buy a local SIM card. A contract can be made for 1 year.

Safety

Northern Cyprus is one of the safest regions in the Mediterranean. Street crime levels are extremely low. The EMU campus is guarded around the clock, with cameras and an access control system. Female students feel safe even in the evening.

Medical care: there is a medical center with Russian-speaking staff on campus. Famagusta has a public hospital and private clinics. Student insurance covers basic services.

FAQ

Are vaccinations required to enter Northern Cyprus?
There are no mandatory vaccinations for entry. However, we recommend having basic vaccines (tetanus, hepatitis A and B). On arrival at EMU you can have a free medical check-up.
Can a student open a bank account?
Yes, banks in the TRNC (Ziraat, Işbank, Vakıfbank) open an account with an international passport and a student ID. This is convenient for paying utilities and receiving transfers.

Conclusion

Life in Northern Cyprus combines European comfort with a relaxed Mediterranean pace. Low crime rates, a warm climate, affordable prices and a friendly Russian-speaking community make adaptation fast and comfortable.
