Student residence permit in Northern Cyprus: a step-by-step guide

What is ikamet (residence permit)

Ikamet is the official name of the student residence permit in Northern Cyprus. It gives you the right to stay legally in the country for the entire study period, as well as to enter and leave multiple times. The student residence permit is issued for 1 year and then renewed.

Without ikamet you cannot stay in Northern Cyprus for more than 30 days (for Russian citizens) or 90 days (for citizens of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan). The fine for overstay is from ₺500 to ₺2,000 depending on the duration.

Required documents

To apply for ikamet you need to prepare the following documents:

DocumentRequirements
International passportCopies of the pages with photo, personal data and visas (if any)
Acceptance letter from EMUOriginal or certified copy
Completed application formThe immigration office form
4 photos35×45 mm, white background, matte
Medical certificateConfirmation of no infectious diseases (can be done on site)
Financial guaranteesA bank statement or a sponsor letter
Proof of accommodationA rental contract or a dormitory certificate
Fee payment receipt≈ $150

Application process

  1. Step 1. Submitting documents. Visit the migration office (Göç ve İskan Bakanlığı) in Famagusta or Nicosia. It is best to apply 7–14 days after arriving in Cyprus.
  2. Step 2. Medical examination. Get checked at an accredited medical center. Results are ready within 1–2 days.
  3. Step 3. Paying the fee. The fee is ≈ $150 (about ₺3,500). Payment is accepted at the bank.
  4. Step 4. Interview. In rare cases the migration office may invite you for an interview. It usually lasts 5–10 minutes.
  5. Step 5. Receiving the card. The residence permit card takes 2–4 weeks to produce. During this period you stay legally — a temporary certificate is issued.

Cost and processing time

ExpenseCost (≈)
State fee$150
Medical certificate$20–50
Translation and notarization$30–60
Administrative fees$10–20

Timeline: application → 2–4 weeks → card ready. We recommend starting the process right after arrival.

Renewing the residence permit

The student ikamet is renewed every year. The renewal process is simpler than the initial application. What to do:

  • Submit the renewal application 30–45 days before the current ikamet expires
  • Provide an EMU certificate of student status (active student certificate)
  • Provide an updated rental contract (if you changed accommodation)
  • Pay the state fee

If you miss the renewal deadline, a fine accrues for each day of delay. We do not recommend putting it off.

Common mistakes

  • Late application. The most common mistake — submitting documents later than 30 days after arrival. The fine can reach ₺2,000.
  • Incomplete document package. Missing criminal record certificate or a wrong translation are reasons for rejection.
  • Wrong photos. Photos older than 6 months or of the wrong size — your documents will be sent back.
  • Passport expiry. If the passport expires before the ikamet, renewal will be refused.
